Raymond Kopa had won the European Cup and the Spanish championship with Real Madrid in 1958, and had guided France to third place at the World Cup held in Sweden that summer.
The result listed above was the outcome of a ballot held amongst a panel of football journalists organised by the magazine
France Football,
with one vote coming from each of the following 16 countries: Austria, Belgium,
Czechoslovakia, England,
France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey,
West Germany and Yugoslavia. The result was announced in
France Football (December 16, 1958).
