The 1950 FIFA Football World Championship was hosted by Brazil. Taking part in a World Cup for the first time, England were considered favourites to win the tournament, but the English professionals failed to progress beyond the first round and even famously lost to the United States. An even bigger upset, in the eyes of the home crowd anyway, came when Uruguay defeated Brazil 2-1 in a decisive encounter to win the title. As the 1950 World Cup consisted of two group rounds, the tournament is the only edition not to feature a final.
